Martial Arts Patches

Gi patches take a beating — washed hot, worn on the mat, gripped and pulled. We use a heavier twill and a denser satin edge on these, and we recommend sew-on rather than iron-on for anything that goes on a training uniform.

Grade sets are easy to keep consistent: one approved design, then the colour changed per grade. We keep the file so next year's intake matches this year's.

MerrowedA raised overlock rope around the edge, about 3 mm wide. The traditional patch edge. Only possible on simple outlines — circles, shields, ovals, rectangles.Hot cutA heated blade seals the edge flush with the stitching. Follows any outline at all, and can go down to a 1 mm border. Use it for cut-out shapes and letters.StitchedA flat satin-stitch border inside the cut line. Lies flatter than merrow under a jacket seam, and works on moderately complex shapes.

05Backing
